Mandy Palumbo's work dwells in the shadows of Halloween folk art, dark assemblage, and most recently, watercolor - an unexpectedly haunting medium that she feels has become her latest obsession. Even when her art strays from overt Halloween themes, an undercurrent of the macabre remains.
Mandy draws heavily from the unsettling beauty of horror and sci-fi cinema, the haunting elegance of New Orleans' history and architecture, the dying light of autumn, and the mysticism of Mexican folk traditions. Nature, in all its raw and decaying glory, plays a vital role in her work.
She collects remnants from across the country- feathers, moss, shells, and ethically sorced animal bones- to construct assemblages that are both strange and sacred. Mandy's watercolors are often centered on the feminine archetype, occult symbolism, botanical spirits, and the surreal. She sometimes paints with melted snow or seawater, letting the elements themselves seep into the piece-infusing each work with a quiet, organic magic.
