In this series, I’ll be sharing must-see Halloween decor videos. All of the collectors proudly display original art pieces amongst their assemblies of Halloween treasures. Not only are the videos fun to watch, they’re overflowing with inspiration and invite us to connect with fellow art lovers.
From the title alone, you know this video is going to be about two devoted oddities collectors. But once you click “play” you’ll find out it is also a story of expression, friendship, and finding joy in being yourself. “Avery and Amy’s Oddities - A Short Film” invites us into the homes of collector powerhouses, Avery Applegate and Amy Scheider. Both are maximists, like goth versions of designer Iris Apfel.
What can we learn from Amy and Avery? Here’s my key takeaways from this video.
Year Round Showcase: If you have the space, be it a whole room or a display cabinet, display all or some of your collection all year. Avery has an oddities room that she can retreat to anytime the mood strikes. Amy has a walk-in Halloween storage room that is functional and provides a dose of Halloween whenever it’s needed.
Pale is Spooky: Black is the default spooky color, but don’t overlook the opportunity for decorating in sepia and creams. Sepia palettes conjure up a warm antique vibe, worthy of displaying tin types and old bones. Avery’s oddities room is a walk-in time capsule.
Share the Love: If you’re so inclined, consider hosting a Halloween open house to invite family and friends to experience your collection. Share the stories behind the pieces and perhaps you’ll encourage someone to start collecting.
